Name change for PHP-NUKE? |

 Audioslaved writes "According to http://opensource.org/licenses/php.php There is a new PHP License out, version 3.0, it says quite a few things that could mean some changes to PHP-NUKE as we know it, here are a few key points from the license that may be of interest.
4. Products derived from this software may not be called "PHP", nor may "PHP" appear in their name, without prior written permission from group@php.net. You may indicate that your software works in conjunction with PHP by saying "Foo for PHP" instead of calling it "PHP Foo" or "phpfoo".
6. Redistributions of any form whatsoever must retain the following acknowledgment: "This product includes PHP, freely available from ".
What does this all mean, is there a name change coming near for PHP-NUKE? NUKE for PHP just doesn't have the same ring to it.
From http://www.php.net/license/ This below is from the PHP development team faq on the PHP license, I am guessing that if you use PHP and build stuff with it, it is automatically released under the PHP License V 3.0, as you have to obey the license in order to use PHP. Here is what their site says in particular.
"Q. I've written a project in PHP that I'm going to release as open source, and I'd like to call it PHPTransmogrifier. Is that OK?
A. We cannot really stop you from using PHP in the name of your project unless you include any code from the PHP distribution, in which case you would be violating the license. But we would really prefer if people would come up with their own names independent of the PHP name.
Why you ask? You are only trying to contribute to the PHP community.
That may be true, but by using the PHP name you are explicitly linking your efforts to those of the entire PHP development community and the years of work that has gone into the PHP project. Every time a flaw is found in one of the thousands of applications out there that call themselves "PHP-Something" the negative karma that generates reflects unfairly on the entire PHP project. We had nothing to do with PHP-Nuke, for example, and every bugtraq posting on that says "PHP" in it.
Your particular project may in fact be the greatest thing ever, but we have to be consistent in how we handle these requests and we honestly have no way of knowing whether your project is actually the greatest thing ever.
So, please, pick a name that stands on its own merits. If your stuff is good, it will not take long to establish a reputation for yourselves. Look at Zope, for example, that is a framework for Python that doesn't have Python in the name. Smarty as well doesn't have PHP in the name and does quite well.""

I have always been of the opinion that phpNuke was a very bad name and that the developers of PHP should not tolerate the use of PHP in the name of scripts written with php. If it has bugs, it will also reflect on them. No one can honestly say that phpNuke is perfect, even with the efforts of the team of nukecops. There are still buggy scripts and errors are handled badly. (even the some of the llast nukecops updates for phpNuke could have been better)
About the name phpNuke?
Firstly it uses php in it's name, a program released under the Opensource(etc). That was really never acknowledged.
Secondly Nuke. What the hell nuke has to do with a Content Management System is anyone's guess. In my opinion, anything to do with the name Nuke should be banned.
A new name for 'phpNuke'? Maybe MyCMS ?
(I now also wonder how phpMyAdmin will finish up) |

I say drop PHP from the name altogether. PHP doesn't mean squat IMHO. Nuke! That's all. Then we bury the obligatory credits on line 1138.
Have you ever heard anybody say, "I just PHP-Nuked my site," or is it, "I Nuked my site?" Is this site called PHP-Nuke Cops or Nuke Cops?
LoL, the loss is their's. PHP sounds like plant food or something. Everyone understands what Nuke means... |

But anyway, if phpnuke has to change it's name phpbb will have too. it would be cool to have a poll here at nukecops to find out what people want as new name. phpNuke is a CMS (Content Management System) so why not call it theName-CMS? |
