Improved PHP-Nuke HOWTO module

Hello Nukers,

an improved version of the PHP-Nuke HOWTO module is out.  It fixes a number of bugs that broke quite a few links,  and needs much less space too! Thanks to all of you who pointed the bugs to me! If you want to know how to save even more hard disk space while keeping only the functionality you need from the PHP-Nuke HOWTO module, just read on...

"Why must it be so darn big?" , people asked  - and they were right! There was a duplicate directory with images that, when extracted, took several Megabytes of precious space!  The directory in question was PHP-Nuke_HOWTO/EN-Book. It contained a subdirectory (images) full of images that exist in the normal images directory too. Just erase this EN-Book dir! It will save you several Megabytes. The new, improved version of the PHP-Nuke HOWTO does not contain this  directory with the duplicate images.

But this is not the only change - you will need the new, improved version of the PHP-Nuke HOWTO  if you want all the links to function properly. In the previous version, for example, all links to fragments (links with a # in the URL) did not work - and there were quite a few of them!

On the other side, the PHP-Nuke HOWTO is not exactly a small module.  There is no format that will fit all purposes (viewing, printing, authoring), so it offers you a whole palette of formats: HTML (one big and many small files), PDF, PS, TXT, RTF, SGML and LYX. The last two are important if you plan to create the documents yourself from LyX or SGML. I will describe this process in a separate document soon.

If you want to save space, then you have to go to the Formats section, look at all the formats there and ask yourself which ones you want to offer to your readers. If you decide, for example, that you don't need the RTF version, then you can delete it, along with all BMP  files in the images directory. This will save you 11MB - quite important, if you are tight on space.

Further candidates for deletion are the PostScript (PS.GZ) and PDF versions.  You'll save 1,5MB from each one. But think well about it, before you press the DEL button - especially PDF is a very popular format and you may be doing no favour to your visitors.

And the colours? All colours in the PHP-Nuke HOWTO Module are controlled by the ck-style.css stylesheet that is part of the module. Some Black & White themes may not  fit well with it, so you will have to open it with a text editor and play with the colours a bit. There are even specialized CSS editors out there that will help you visualize the effect of your settings. If you arrive at a CSS that matches your theme welll, please send it to me - ideally we should have a CSS for every standard PHP-Nuke theme.

If you have further questions, you are welcome to ask them in my PHP-Nuke Forum.
